Genetic testing also known as DNA testing is used to detect variations in the structure of the DNA gene or chromosome. Genetic testing can also involve measuring the effects of genetic modifications, such as RNA analysis as an output of gene expression, or measuring particular protein production through biochemical analysis. Genetic testing can be used in a medical setting to diagnose or rule out potential genetic disorders, predict risks for particular conditions or obtain knowledge that can be used to tailor medical care based on the genetic makeup of a person. According to the National Institutes of Health, tests are available for more than 2,000 genetic conditions, and one study reported more than 75,000 genetic tests were on the market as of 2017.
