: Isotopes are variations of a particular chemical element that vary in number of neutrons, and consequently in number of nucleons. Both isotopes of a given element have the same number of protons in each atom but different number of neutrons. The number of protons within the nucleus of the atom is called the atomic number which is equal to the number of electrons in the atom which is neutral (non-ionized). Could atomic number identify a particular element, but not the isotope; the number of neutrons in an atom of a given element can vary widely. The number of nucleons (both protons and neutrons) in the nucleus is the atom's mass number, and each isotope of a given element has a different mass number.
