An acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma) is a benign tumor that arises on the equilibrium (vestibular) and hearing, or auditory (cochlear) nerves that pass from the inner ear to the brain, as seen in the image above. Tumor pressure on the nerve can cause hearing loss and imbalance. A non-cancerous tumour on the central nerve that connects to the brain from the inner ear. A Schwannoma vestibular typically expands gradually, or not at all. In a few cases, however, it may grow rapidly and become large enough to pressure the brain and interfere with vital functions. Tumor pressure can cause hearing loss, ear ringing, and instability. The tumor can require surveillance only.
