Autoimmune hemolytic anemia.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) occurs when antibodies directed against the individual's own red blood cells ( RBCs) cause them to burst (lyse), leading to an inadequate number of red blood cells carrying oxygen in the circulation. In serious cases, the lifetime of the RBCs is reduced from the normal 100–120 days to only a few days. The intracellular components of the RBCs are released into circulating blood and tissues, leading to some of this condition's characteristic symptoms. Typically the antibodies are directed against high-incidence antigens, and they often commonly act against allogeneic RBCs (RBCs arising from outside the individual itself, e.g. in the case of blood transfusion).
